African American Folklore Embroidery

As we just finished up the unit on African Folklore I wanted to share with the class an example of an African American Folklore Embroidery! This is teaching the next generation to stitch with enthusiasm and creativity! When designs are complete, they can be turned into purses, backpacks, pillows, quilts and clothes. The embroidery kit includes a braid of bright African threads and you pull out from the top of the braid your color choice. The meaning of the embroidery is full of color because it is important to gratify and give thanks to color. That means Africans were chastized for so long for being not of the "ivory complexion" like Caucasians, that they are celebrating their heritage by embroidering these tote bags etc. with vibrant authentic african threads to enjoy and celebrate their culture and heritage. This is a very intriguing tradition!

  1. Wow! That's pretty incredible. Just looking at all the detail and the vibrant colours I know it that type of kit must take a while. I took some sewing classes in middle school and to get like a bear done it took a good couple months. I like how you mention all of the things it can be used for, kind of like encouraging the next generation to take a piece of cultural identity with them in the form of a purse or clothes. I love how fine the stitch work in that photo looks and the small beads at the bottom. I think the read border emphasizes the colors. It's also interesting to note that the majority of those colors are like bright neons. It must be very culturally significant because you don't get that a lot. i like these kinds of trend where you can see the culturally links. Plus even if it wasn't someones specific style, they couldn't help but admire the type of craftsmenship it would have took to originally make something like that.
